Obituary: Enrique Cerda Jr.

Enrique Cerda Jr. of Gustine passed away Jan. 6.

He was 45.

Mr. Cerda was a native of McAllen, Tex., and had lived in Gustine for 37 years.

He was a lead operator with the Santa Nella County Water District for 11 years.

Mr. Cerda enjoyed fishing, motorcycle riding and bodybuilding.

Mr. Cerda is survived by his parents, Enrique and Umbelina Cerda of Gustine; a brother, Gilbert Cerda of Gustine; and three sisters, Anna Leung of Milpitas, Linda Delgado of Newman and Elvia Silva of Tulare.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, at Hillview Funeral Chapel, Gustine, with a rosary to follow. A second visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles in Gustine, followed by a mass of Christian burial at 10.

Interment will be in Hills Ferry Cemetery.

Lifelong Gustine resident Lionel Joseph Brazil passed away Jan. 2 at 66 years of age.

Mr. Brazil was a well-known dairyman who served as an executive member of the California Milk Advisory Board.

He was also involved in real estate development.

Obituary: Joe Travao

Joe Travao

Joe Anthony Travao of Modesto passed away Jan. 10 with his family by his side.

He was 76.

Mr. Travao was born in Gustine to Emilia and Mateusz Trovao.

The family moved its dairy to Modesto in 1954, and he met the love of his life, Beverly. The two married on May 5, 1962.

Mr. Travao worked on the family dairy and also was a meat packer.

He and his brothers went into cattle ranching in 1975.

Mr. Travao was an active parishioner at St. Stanislaus Church.

He was a member of the Our Lady of Miracles Society in Gustine and MPPA.

Mr. Travao loved his family dearly and left them with a lifetime of memories, particularly trips to Pacific Grove and the many round-ups in Del Puerto and Crows Landing. He was known for his honesty, integrity and generosity – as well as his trademark yellow hard hat and homemade wine.

In addition to Beverly, his wife of 51 years, Mr. Travao is survived by his daughters, Connie (Greg) Travao-Chrysler, Teresa (Michael) Brazil and Margaret (Delio) Costa; five siblings, Manuel, John, Emily, Delores and Bernie; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Irma and Margaret; a brother, Matthew; and one grandchild.

A funeral mass was held Monday.

Burial was in Hills Ferry Cemetery.

Lenora E. Schluter, 80, passed away Dec. 17.

Mrs. Schluter was a native of Washington State and was a long-time resident of Gustine.

She was a retired nurse.

Her hobbies includes bowling and gardening.

She is survived by two daughters, Aleta Pallan of Gustine and Mary Schluter of Fresno; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Schluter was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Ray Schluter.

Services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 2:30 p.m. in San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Santa Nella.

Olivia Freitas, 95, of Gustine passed away Jan. 22.

Mrs. Freitas was born in Lowell, Mass., and was a resident of Gustine for 80 years.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Freitas was a parishioner at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles. She was also an avid Bingo enthusiast.

She is survived by two daughters, Delores Wheeler of Modesto and Virginia Souza of Gustine; a brother, Joe Silva of Gustine; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Freitas was preceded in death by her husband, Frank J. Freitas.

A mass of Christian burial was held Monday.

Interment was in Hills Ferry Cemetery.

Obituary: Cleo Chappell

Former Gustine resident Cleo G. Chappell passed away Jan. 16 at 93 years of age.

Mrs. Chappell was a native of Kent, Wash.

She moved to Gustine with her parents, Bill and Mary O’Grady, and brother Leo O’Grady, in 1933. She attended grade school and high school in Gustine.

During this time, she met Bill Chappell. They were married at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in March 1938.

They lived in Gustine for many years and established a business as well as many lifelong friendships.

They relocated to Livermore in 1951, where they spent their remaining years. Bill Chappell passed away in 2003.

Mrs. Chappell is survived by two daughters, Pat and Marilyn; three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Christina Lee Victor, 64, of Gustine, passed away Feb. 6.

Mrs. Victor was born in San Francisco. She moved to Gustine from Redwood City five years ago.

She was a homemaker who was dedicated to her family and was a caretaker for many.

Mrs. Victor is survived by her husband, John R. Victor of Gustine; a daughter, Amber Cox of Newman; a brother, Eric Dahl of Sunnyvale; two sisters, Ingrid Abberton and Alison Dahl, both of Sunnyvale, and three grandchildren.

Belmira Mary Perry of Gustine passed away Feb. 5.

She was 91.

Mrs. Perry was born in Newman. She was a lifelong resident of Gustine, where she was a homemaker.

She was a parishioner at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles, and belonged to the Our Lady of Miracles Society and Sociedade Portuguesa Rainha Santa Isabel (SPRSI).

Mrs. Perry is survived by her husband, Benjamin C. Perry of Gustine; three sons, Benjamin J. Perry and Michael Perry, both of Gustine, and James Perry of Los Banos; a brother, Tony Trovao of Gustine; a sister, Evelyn Galante of Gustine; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A mass of Christian burial was held Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles.

Interment was in Hills Ferry Cemetery.

Manuel U. Gonzales of Newman passed away Feb. 7 with his family at his side.

He was 85.

Mr. Gonzales was born in Fort Stockton, Tex. He was a resident of Newman for 65 years.

Mr. Gonzales worked as a welder at United Foods in Modesto for 30 years.

He was a parishioner at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church.

He was a U.S. Army corporal who served during the Korean War and in Japan.

He loved fishing and spending time with his brother.

Mr. Gonzales is survived by two daughters, Maryann Corral of Newman and Linda Rodrigues of Turlock; four sons, Ray Gonzales of San Francisco, Robert Gonzales of Modesto, and Louie Gonzales and Johnny Gonzales, both of Newman; a brother, Tony Gonzales of Los Banos; four sisters, Nancy Gonzales and Sherrie Padilla, both of Modesto, Mary Dominguez of Hayward and Delma Nunes of Los Banos; his caretaker and son-in-law, Greg Anchondo of Newman; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jennie Hernandez Gonzales; a son, Manuel Gonzales Jr.; a sister, Elizabeth Sanchez; and his parents, Reyes and Erminia Gonzales.

Visitation will be held today (Thursday) from 5-7 p.m. at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church, with a rosary to follow.

A second visitation will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 14, at the church, with a mass of Christian burial to follow at 10.

Interment with military honors will follow in Hills Ferry Cemetery.

Andrew Gonzalez

Andrew Trejo Gonzalez of Newman passed away Feb. 13.

He was 97 years of age.

Mr. Gonzalez was born in Colon, Tex., and was a resident of Newman for 55 years, where he was a parishioner at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church.

He was a railroad worker for Southern Pacific for 30 years.

He is survived by his wife, Augstina Gonzalez of Turlock; three sons, Refugio Gonzalez of Hilmar, Andrew Gonzalez of Nevada and Manuel Gonzalez of Newman; eight grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two grandchildren.

A visitation was held Wednesday, Feb. 19, from 5-7 p.m. at Hillview Funeral Chapel, Newman.

A second visitation will be held today (Thursday) from 9-9:45 a.m. at the chapel. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. in Hills Ferry Cemetery.

Frank Morgan

Frank N. Morgan of Newman passed away Feb. 9 at 90 years of age.

Mr. Morgan was a native of Haileyville, Okla.

He lived in Gustine for many years before moving to Newman two years ago.

He was an auto mechanic for 45 years.

Mr. Morgan was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was a member of American Legion, Manuel M. Lopes Post 240 in Gustine.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Mr. Morgan is survived by a daughter, Carla Roberts of Madera; three brothers, Kenneth Morgan of Ohio, George Morgan of Morgan Hill and Donald Morgan of Colorado; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Morgan; a son, Frank Morgan Jr.; a daughter, Pamela Secrest; a brother, Howard Morgan; and four sisters, Ruby Dutcher, Jewel “Dolly” Qualls, Ann Fernandez and Mamie Brady.

Private service.

William Forrest Bunker of Newman passed away Feb. 10 at 75 years of age.

Mr. Bunker was born in Gustine. He was a resident of Newman for 30 years after moving from Gustine.

He was a farmer for 20 years, and belonged to the National Rifle Association.

He was an avid reader.

Mr. Bunker is survived by his step-daughter, Yvonne Bunker of Simi Valley; and a brother, Thomas Bunker of Gustine.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Bunker.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

John Vasquez, 62, of Newman, passed away Feb. 19.

Mr. Vasquez was born in Merced. He lived in Newman for 19 years. He worked as an industrial mechanic for 44 years, most recently at Saputo Cheese Company for several years.

Mr. Vasquez was a musician who played many instruments, and enjoyed being with his grandchildren and family.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Vasquez of Newman; three sons, Will Whiteaker of Newman, Walter Whiteaker of Gustine and Joshua Vasquez of San Francisco; six daughters, Melinda Nunes, Priscilla Whiteaker and Audra Whiteaker, all of Los Banos, Brenda Whiteaker of San Francisco, Carrie Watler of Washington and Amy Vasquez of Merced; two brothers, Louie Vasquez and Jack Vasquez, both of Los Banos; two sisters, Michelle Vasquez of Los Banos and Teresa Vasquez of Clovis; 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 5-7 p.m. at Hillview Funeral Chapel, Newman.

Graveside services will be held today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. in Los Banos Cemetery.

Dolores Rosamond

Dolores Theresa Rosamond of Gustine passed away Feb. 19 at 80 years of age.

Ms. Rosamond was a native of Gustine and long-time resident of the community before moving to San Jose. She returned to Gustine 12 years ago.

She was a 1952 graduate of Gustine High School.

Ms. Rosamond was a parishioner at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles belonged to the Altar Society.

She was a queen for the OLM Celebration in 1950, and participated in the Celebration’s 75th anniversary in 2011. She was a member of the OLM Society and Young Ladies Institute (YLI).

The youngest of seven children, she went on a trip of a lifetime to the Azores with two sisters to visit their parents’ homeland.

She enjoyed socializing and loved music, particularly that of the big band era and Julio Iglesias.

Ms. Rosamond worked for John Cabral at an appliance store in Gustine and later was a Data Specialist II at the San Jose Police Department for 28 years.

She is survived by her son, Patrick (Martha) Rosamond of Magalia; a sister, Elsie (Edwin) Silva of Aptos; two grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Craig; four sisters, Francisca Martins, Mary Inacio, Adeline Travis and Virginia Travis; and a brother, Frank Travis Jr.

A visitation was held Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 5-7 p.m. at Hillview Funeral Chapel, Gustine, followed by a rosary.

A second visitation will be held today (Thursday) at 9 a.m. at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles followed by a mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m.

Interment will follow in Hills Ferry Cemetery.

Agnes Grace Lopes, 98, of Newman, passed away Feb. 26.

Mrs. Lopes was born in Patterson and raised in Gustine. She lived in Newman most of her adult life.

She was a homemaker, and also worked as a housekeeper at San Luis Care Center and for many years was a butcher at Lloyd’s Market.

She was a parishioner at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Newman.

She was an avid supporter of the Orestimba High band. Her sons Ayres and Daniel played in the band during their high school years at OHS. Mrs. Lopes also created and sewed costumes for theatre and ballet productions for her daughter Bernadette and son David.

She is survived by two sons, Daniel Lopes of Gustine and David Lopes of Oakland; a daughter, Bernadette Lopes of Berkeley; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by a son, Ayres J. Lopes Jr.; three brothers and three sisters.

Visitation was held Wednesday, March 5, from 5-7 p.m. at Hillview Funeral Chapel in Newman, followed by a rosary.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. today (Thursday) at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church.

Interment will follow in Hills Ferry Cemetery.

Remembrances may be directed to: St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl., Memphis, Tenn. 38105; to a local SPCA or to a favorite charity.

Mary Telmy Garcia, 76,  of Livermore passed away Feb. 27 at San Luis Care Center.

Mrs. Garcia was born in Mexico and was a resident of Livermore for 30 years. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Garcia is survived by her husband, Eduardo Garcia of Livermore; a daughter, Thelmy Hara of Newman; four sisters residing in Mexico and one grandchild.

Visitation will be from 10-noon Friday, March 7, at Hillview Funeral Chapel, Newman, followed by a graveside service at 1 p.m. in Hills Ferry Cemetery.
