John Lawrence Jr.

John E. Lawrence Jr. of Chowchilla passed away Nov. 22.

He was 79.

Mr. Lawrence was a native of Newman. He lived in Newman, Gustine, Hilmar, Stevinson and Chowchilla.

He was a dairyman for 20 years.

Mr. Lawrence is survived by his son, Richard Lawrence of Patterson; two daughters, Daria Conyers of Lakeside and Gretchen MacKoul of Massachusetts; a sister, Darlene Silva of Los Banos; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Lawrence; and a sister, Doris Cardoza.

A mass of Christian burial was held at noon Wednesday, Nov. 27, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Patterson.

Interment followed in Hills Ferry Cemetery.

Amador Dominguez

Amador Sandoval Dominguez of Redding passed away Oct. 30 at 71 years of age.

Mr. Dominguez was a native of Brawley.

He attended Orestimba High School, and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

He is survived by two children Julie Trone and Tim (Cynthia) Dominguez; a brother, Victor S. (Ann) Dominguez; two sisters, Lupe (Bill) Alameda and Theresa (Lenny) Freitas; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Amador and Dominga; a brother Raymond and a sister Margaret.

A memorial service with military honors will be held Monday, Dec. 9, at 12:30 p.m. in San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Santa Nella.

Manuel “Butch” Alves

Manuel “Butch” Alves of Gustine passed away Nov. 19.

He was 57.

Mr. Alves was born in Los Banos, and resided in Gustine and Los Banos.

He was a 1975 graduate of Orestimba High School.

Mr. Alves was the world champion of the Calaveras County Fair Frog Jump in 1997, and appeared on the Jay Leno Show.

He enjoyed fishing, frogging, crawdadding, and hunting for pigs, deer and ducks. He also loved antiquing.

Mr. Alves owned and operated Alves Tree Service.

He is survived by his ex-wife, Debbie Alves of Gustine; a daughter, Sheli Alves of Newman; his parents, Manuel E. Alves of Los Banos and Anna E. Alves of Gustine; four sisters, Charlene Runnells-Todd and Marlene Siemiller, both of Los Banos, Cindi Alves-Lawrence of Clovis and Melissa (Linnel) Alves-Fontes of Merced; two grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and other loved ones.

He is preceded in death by his son, Christopher Alves.

He will be deeply missed by family and friends who enjoyed his kind heart, jokes, stories and pranks.

A Christian mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles in Gustine. A memorial lunch will follow in the OLM parish hall.

Former Newman resident Ted Alcorn of Port Royal, S.C., passed away Nov. 21.

He was 64.

Mr. Alcorn had a love of sailing, and for many years lived with his wife Shari aboard their yacht Mystique as they cruised the seas and oceans of the world.

His adventurous life also included a love of flying small aircraft, photography, speedboat racing and cycling, among other interests.

Obituary: Luis E. Vaz

Luis E. Vaz of Gustine passed away Wednesday, Nov. 27, at age 66.

Mr. Vaz was born in Agualva, Terceira, the Azores. He lived in Gustine for the past three years after previously residing in Newman.

He was retired, and was a parishioner of the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles in Gustine.

Mr. Vaz is survived by his wife, Juvenalia Vaz of Gustine; two sons, David Vaz of Hilmar and Elvis Vaz of Newman; two daughters, Luisa Rocha and Cristal Vaz, both of Gustine; four brothers; four sisters; and four grandchildren.

A Rosary was held Wednesday, Dec. 4, followed by mass of Christian burial at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles in Gustine.

Interment was in Hills Ferry Cemetery.

Juliana Roldan

Juliana Ramirez Roldan, 79, of Newman, passed away Nov. 25.

Mrs. Roldan was a native of the Philippines. She lived in Newman for 10 years.

She was a wonderful homemaker and a devoted Catholic who participated in many church and school activities.

She enjoyed cooking, and loved spending time with her family.

Mrs. Roldan is survived by her husband, Leonardo Roldan of Newman; three sons, Rolando Roldan and Leonardo Roldan Jr., both of the Philippines, and Gilbert Roldan of Roseville; three daughters, Arleen Bugarin of Gustine, Justine Crizaldo of the Philippines and Paulyn Headley of Roseville; two brothers, Julian Ramirez of the Philippines and Larry Ramirez of Fairfield; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Vicente Roldan; a sister, Aurea Achin; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 6, followed by a mass of Christian burial at 1 p.m. at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles.

Interment will be in the Philippines.

Marjorie Ann Garcia

Marjorie Ann Garcia, 54, of Newman passed away Wednesday, Nov. 6.

Mrs. Garcia was born in Richmond, and was a resident of Newman for six years.

She was a homemaker as well as a foster parent who loved spending time with family and friends.

She was a member of the Red Hatters of the Orestimba Dazzling Divas, and enjoyed playing bingo, cooking and going on cruises.

Mrs. Garcia is survived by her husband, Robert Garcia of Newman; two sons, Robert Garcia, Jr. of Patterson and Jason H. Garcia of Newman; three daughters, Collyne Hurtado and Rina Hall, both of Patterson, and Rachel Garcia of Pacifica; two brothers, Richard Leitgeb of Texas and Donald Leitgeb of Sacramento; a sister, Laura Haverstock of King City; and seven grandchildren.

A graveside service was held.

Former Newman resident Ladene Weldon-Carvalho of Fair Oaks passed away Oct. 17.

She was 77.

Mrs. Weldon-Carvalho was a retired nurse.

She is survived by her husband, John A. Carvalho; a son, Garry Weldon of Elk Grove; a daughter, Leanne Story of Rancho Cordova; three step-children, Amanda Carvalho Vargas of Newman, John Carvalho Jr. of Modesto and Cindy Carvalho Schut of Patterson; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Interment was in Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, Dixon.

Lynn Marie Valerio, 67, of Gustine passed away Dec. 2.

Ms. Valerio was a California native and a resident of Gustine for 19 years.

She was a music teacher for 10 years.

Ms. Valerio was a parishioner at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles.

She served in the U.S. Army for many years, and was a member of the Women’s Army Corps Band.

She was also a member of the Gustine City Band, and was a choir director.

Ms. Valerio belonged to the American Legion, and was a member of the Portuguese Fraternal Society of America.

She is survived by a brother, Steve Valerio of Tennessee; and a sister, Mary Jo Martilla of Oregon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Mary Kay Valerio.

A mass of Christian burial was held Wednesday at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles.

Interment was in San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Santa Nella.

Gerald Gordon Snowdall of Newman passed away Dec. 4 at 77 years of age.

Mr. Snowdall was a native of Marysville, Kan. He lived in Newman for 65 years.

He was a scale master and forklift driver for DiMare Brothers in Newman for 50 years.

Mr. Snowdall is survived by a son, Gerald Snowdall of Arizona; a brother-in-law, Ken Johnson of Stevinson; and a sister-in-law, Angie Snowdall of Newman.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 13, in Hills Ferry Cemetery.

Tony L. Lopes of Gustine passed away Dec. 3 at 86 years of age.

Mr. Lopes was a widely-respected dairy producer with a lifelong passion for the industry. His Bunker Road dairy was the first in the area to incorporate modern technology and was the largest individually-owned dairy in North America when completed in 1975.

He was deeply devoted to his family, his faith and his heritage.

Lydia Hernandez

Lydia Jimenez Hernandez, 55, of Newman, passed away Monday, Dec. 9.

Mrs. Hernandez was born in Mission, Tex., and had lived in Newman for 33 years.

She was a homemaker, and attended mass at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church.

Mrs. Hernandez loved spending time with her grandson.

She is survived by her husband, Jesus Hernandez of Newman; a son, Manuel Hernandez of Newman; two daughters, Vanessa Cardenas of Texas and Edith Gonzalez of Newman; her mother, Maria Navarro Jimenez of Texas; a brother, Ramon Jimenez of Patterson; two sisters, Graciela Lopez of Texas and Consuelo Jimenez of Newman; and one grandchild.

Se was preceded in death by her father, Jose Jimenez.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, Dec. 18, from 5-7 p.m. with a rosary to follow at Hillview Funeral Chapel, Newman. A second visitation will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, followed by a mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joachim’s Church. Interment will follow in Hills Ferry Cemetery.

Brenda Diaz

Brenda Kay Dias, 62, of Crows Landing passed away Dec. 6.

Ms. Dias was a caregiver for over 20 years who gave to others with compassion, kindness and love.

She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and family. Her hobbies included gardening, painting, quilting, sewing, crocheting and ceramics.

One of her greatest passions was genealogy. She enjoyed not only tracing her own roots but helping others unearth their ancestral stories as well. She published her family history research in several books.

Ms. Dias was truly a “jack of all trades.” Not only could she fix absolutely anything, she could complete the latest video game with her beloved grandson.

She is survived by two daughters, Shannon Dias of Crows Landing and Brandi Boehme of Merced; a sister, Sue (Keith) Ford of Modesto; a brother, Danny (Pat) Hickman; two grandchildren, several aunts and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Martha Hickman.

Visitation was held Wednesday, Dec. 11, from 5-7 p.m. at Hillview Funeral Chapel, Patterson.

A second visitation will begin today (Thursday) at 8 a.m. at the chapel, with services at 10. Interment will follow in Patterson District Cemetery.

Diana McCoy

Diana May McCoy of Newman passed away Dec. 14.

She was 71.

Ms. McCoy was born in Patterson. She was a was a 1960 graduate of Patterson High School and went on to graduate from San Diego State College.

Ms. McCoy was a Newman resident for 42 years. She was an elementary teacher for many years at schools in Newman and Crows Landing.

She attended Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Patterson and Westside Christian Center in Gustine.

Ms. McCoy belonged to the garden clubs in Newman and Patterson, and was a member of the Orestimba 50-Plus Club.

She enjoyed going to estate sales and liked traveling, especially cruises.

Ms. McCoy is survived by a son, Danny O’Connell of North Carolina; three step-sons, Rick McCoy, Steve McCoy and Jeff McCoy, all of Tennessee; a daughter, Rhonda McCoy of Oregon; a brother, Arthur Charles Knutson Jr. of Sacramento; two sisters, Winifred Wilson and Mary Ann Meredith, both of Lincoln, and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be held today (Thursday) from 5-7 p.m. at Hillview Funeral Chapel, Patterson.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, with interment to follow in Patterson District Cemetery.

Obituary: Alvin ‘Alvie’ Souza

Alvin “Alvie” Joseph Souza of Gustine passed away Dec. 21.

He was 88.

Mr. Souza was born and raised in Gustine, where he attended Gustine High School before leaving in his junior year.

He lived in Los Banos and Kingsburg before returning to Gustine, where he lived the past 50 years.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and was stationed in Hanau, Germany From Sept. 25, 1950, to Sept. 3, 1952.

He married Lena Dianne Coelho on June 18, 1960, in Laton.

He was a cowboy for 60 years.

In addition to his wife of 53 years, Mr. Souza is survived by two daughters, Brendadene D. Souza of Gustine and Shirley (George Sr.) Rodriguez of Kingsburg; four brothers, Edwin Souza, Richard Souza and Anthony “Butch” Souza, all of Gustine, and Manuel Souza of Ceres; two sisters, Lorraine Jones of Modesto and Maryann Watson of Gustine; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Sunday, Dec. 29, from 5-7 p.m. at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles in Gustine, with a rosary to follow. A mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, Dec. 30, at 11:30 a.m. at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles. Interment will follow in San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Santa Nella.

Mrs. Haws was a native of Phoenix, Ariz., and was a resident of Stanislaus County for many years.

Mrs. Haws is survived by her husband, Lyle Haws of Turlock; two daughters, Charlene Silva of Newman and Susan Nichols of Oregon; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Ms. Stone was born in Dayton, Ohio. She lived in Newman for 48 years.

She was an artist.

Ms. Stone is survived by her mother, Gale Blankenship Mellow of Denair; a son, Russell Travis Tanner of Gustine; a daughter, Amanda Silva Castro of Turlock; a brother, Rocky Brown of Nevada; and a sister, Yvonne Borrelli of Denair.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Gaalswyk.

A mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, Jan. 10, at 10 a.m. at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles in Gustine. Interment will follow in Hills Ferry Cemetery.

Obituary: Virginia Pierce

Virginia Pierce

Former Newman resident and school teacher Virginia Crinklaw Pierce of Alturas passed away Jan. 3 at 93 years of age.

Mrs. Pierce was born in Oxnard and attended high school in Patterson.

As a member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) in the 1940s, she was among the first women in history to fly U.S. military aircraft.

The WASP ferried military aircraft, and in that role Mrs. Pierce piloted a wide variety of fighters and bombers.

Decades later, at age 89, she was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for her service.

Mrs. Pierce lived in Newman from the early 1950s to the mid-1960s.

She taught school in Gustine for three years, Newman for eight years, Lee Vining for two years, Alturas for three years and Cedarville for more than 20 years.

In addition to her military service and distinguished teaching career was a judge and a justice of the peace.

She is survived by her son, Kern (Gayle) Hunewill of Newman; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

At her request, no services are planned.

Anthony Silva “Tony” Mendonca, a lifelong resident of Gustine, passed away Dec. 30.

He was 84.

Mr. Mendonca was a long-time creamery worker who was also involved in farming.
